Heard the first rumblings of this on a great illustration blog. It's a full length animated film-in-the-works, but the concept art is worth a peek. Think Samurai Jack, but with tonsures rather than katanas. No sign yet of any fussy whale-islands (aren't all Brendans the same?), but hopes are up.

I'd swear I see echoes more along the line of Kim Possible's creator, Mark McCorkle. Or Alan Bodner...dunno which was more responsible. Google an image search of Ron Stoppable, you'll see what I mean.
Of course, I really like that style, so it's all good.
As far as character design goes, I agree. But those backdrops reek of Tartakovsky (sp?). Or maybe disney's sleeping beauty...
Good call on those backgrounds. All of disney's older animated classics did have such wonderful backgrounds. it is nice to see something more modern sticking with something that has been largely replaced by CG.
